Kid-friendly and so tasty! If you, like everyone else I know, love a delicious cheeseburger, this skinny cheeseburger pie is for you! I promise, you are going to want to eat this every day of the week.
So good old America is home to the classic cheeseburger that we all love, but if you are trying to watch your caloric intake, one burger may put you out for the day. A classic cheeseburger, depending on what you get on it, can fall between 400 to over 1000 calories. Don’t get me wrong, I want you to indulge and enjoy a burger, but not sure how that would settle with your stomach every night, what do we think? I would rather opt for this delicious skinny cheeseburger pie to enjoy with my family and feel good!
Another twist to this recipe aside from the low calories is that I actually used lean ground turkey instead of ground beef. In my opinion you truly cannot taste the difference, but if you are a hardcore cheeseburglar then go ahead and use some lean ground beef.
How do you make skinny cheeseburger pie?
1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray at 9-inch round with cookie spray
2. In a large skillet, over medium heat, add the ground turkey, break up into small pieces, and cook fully.
3. While the turkey is cooking, remove the crescent rolls from the can, and separate them into 8 triangles. Line the 9-inch round with the triangles, the point facing inward, the wider part of the triangle will line the edge of the round creating a crust. Use your fingers to press all of the edges together. Use the image below for reference. Bake for 5 minutes.
4. Remove the turkey from the pan and set aside. Add garlic, and chopped onion into the pan and saute until onion is translucent.
5. Add the turkey back into the pan, spices, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and combine. Add the cottage cheese, combine, and allow to cook on low for 1-2 more minutes.
6. Add the turkey mixture into the pre baked crust, top with cheddar cheese.
7. Cover the crust with tin foil, and bake for 20 more minutes.
8. Cut into 7 slices and enjoy with pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce on the side!
Can you meal prep skinny cheeseburger pie?
Yes, you can make this dish at the beginning of the week and enjoy it for the whole week. It is the perfect weeknight meal. I stored it in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap. After you cut your slice, warm it up in the microwave for 60 to 90 seconds.
Will my kids like this recipe?
Do your kids like hamburger helper? Do your kids like cheesy beef bundles? Then they will love this! It is easy to make, low calorie, and kid-friendy, what else can you ask for? This is the perfect recipe!
How many calories per serving?
This recipe makes 7 servings. I serve it with a side salad, and a nice dill pickle on the side. For one slice of skinny cheeseburger pie, it is 275 calories, 9 grams of fat, 18.1 grams of carbs, and 27.6 grams of protein! Low-calorie, and nice and high in protein!
Can I use ground beef?
If you do not want to use lean ground turkey like I did, feel free to use lean ground beef, just note that the nutrition information will change and likely be higher in fat and higher in calories!
Can I use fat free cheese?
If you want to make this recipe even lower in calories you can use fat free cheddar cheese in place of the reduced fat cheddar cheese, they will both be great! I decided to use reduced-fat in this recipe because it tends to have more flavor and melt a bit better than the fat-free version.
I do not have cottage cheese, what do I do?
If you do not have cottage cheese or if you do not like it, sub for 1 cup of fat free Greek yogurt or sour cream, both will taste amazing! But if cottage cheese freaks you out, have no fear, it melts when you add it into the pan, so you do not get any curds when it is all baked, it just adds protein and creamyness to this recipe.
